't the fiscal cliff. this is what obama has already baked into the cake. your flexible savings account will be trashed by taxes. millions of special needs families will find their taxes go up. if you're really sick, you can't deduct as much of your health care costs as you used to. these are all the ways that obama's raising taxes, $1 trillion, $1.1 trillion, over the next decade. five major taxes. his new taxes are not off the table. they hit directly into the middle class. medical devices. when you go to the hospital, medical devices like riding in a wheelchair will get more expensive because of this tax. i mean, these taxes are damaging. he wants to make them permanent. >> i think grover knows that the major source of additional taxes is part of the affordable care act is asking higher income individuals over $250,000 to pay higher capital gains and more on their medicare contribution. that was the bulk of the taxes. so to suggest that this is a big tax increase on middle income americans is just not right. the president's proposing that we extend tax relief for the middle income am

me now. treasury secretary timothy geithner, president obama's point man in these fiscal cliff negotiations, ran the gauntlet this morning. he appeared on all five sunday talk shows, including "meet the press" of course, what else did he say? >> craig, you know if we're in the posturing stage and a lot of people think we're still in the posturing stage with, 29 or 30 days to go. we better hope that they're just posturing, because after the period of optimism, the post-election talk of compromise, you remember john boehner came out the day after the election, the president spoke about compromise as well. they're as far apart as they ever have been and the clock is ticking. what timothy geithner said is as follows, nothing is going to get done unless republicans agree to raise rates on the wealthiest 2% of americans we know the figure by now. those couples filing jointly making more than $250,000. the rates must rise, not a matter of closing loopholes or deductions or simplifying the tax code this is the way it has to be to meet their revenue goals. contrary to what mitch mcconne

president obama and congress over the fiscal curb is the unraveling of the con sen sense. glover nor quis managed to get every single republican running for office from school boards up to president, signing a pledge that reads, i pledge to taxpayers to one, oppose any and all efforts to increase the income tax rates for individuals and or businesses and two, oppose any net reduction or elimination of reductions in credits unless matched dollar for dollar. his pledge has been useful to the republican party for a number of reasons. first, it led the republican party to push tax policies that move hundreds of billions of dollars into the bank accounts of wealthy people. it's also given the central right a single, simple policy objective to pursue, no matter what. a kind of north star for modern conservatism. now, members of congress seem to be losing their way. >> there's a lot that has been said about this pledge. i will tell you, when i go to the constituent that is reelected me, it's not about that pledge. >> i believe we shouldn't raise rates, but i think grover is wrong when it comes t

obama said in the campaign he favored a balanced approach to getting over the fiscal cliff. balanced normally means about 50/50. 50% spending restraint. 50% revenue enhancement. but the president's proposal is apparently something like 80% tax increases. 20% spending restraint. unspecified. unspecified means it won't ever happen. >> jamie: what do you expect to happen given the fact that speaker boehner says that the white house is not willing to compromise on anything. if you are an american and you are sitting at home, maybe you are relying on entitlements. do you think both sides will have to cut entitlements and which ones? >> guest: entitlement reform will have to become part of a comprehensive approach early in the next year. i don't think in the holiday period you will be able to sort out any kind of a grand bargain. what really should worry americans is taxes will go up on everybody, unless some resolution is made by december 31. that will weaken the economy. that will ultimately weaken the people who pay the bills for entitlements. that is the first problem we have. >> jamie
